Over the season Sept98-May99 and beyond, several student film societies around the country are getting together to help new filmmakers by reserving nights in their programme so that they can showcase new shorts and features.
The hope is that this will become a valuable addition to the festival
circuit to allow the screening of new films around the country and
provide increased audience and media attention. Many of these societies
have good links not just with student media but others also. The
ultimate aim is that by touring new work societies can help to build
up interest for a film in a similar way that student unions do for
some bands. The project is being co-ordinated by Manchester University
Film Society, currently twice-in-a-row holders of "Best Student
Film Society" (96-7.97-8). There will be several slots available
each month around the country for the screening of work on 35mm,
16mm and VHS formats, each backed by the society's own publicity
machines as well as press releases and the opportunities for write-ups
in other media. Those interested in the project, we would much welcome
submissions of work (MUFS pay for return) as well as your questions
and comments. Contact John Stroud Vice President (Films Admin) MUFS

ATOM is looking for short films
We need your help in locating excellent independent short films from your area!
ATOM is a new company that offers filmmakers a creative and dynamic approach to marketing and distributing their short films. ATOM is developing new venues for marketing high quality, short-form entertainment by capitalizing on emerging technologies and distribution channels. These channels - from very high-tech (broadband Internet streaming and DVD, for example) to currently under-used venues such as hotels and airlines - are opening up tremendous possibilities for exposing short films and their creators to a wider audience. Since our aim is to provide unparalleled distribution for short films, we also aggressively pursue more traditional forms of distribution including broadcast and cable TV, theatrical and home video.
Undoubtedly, to do this right requires strong financial backing and good contacts. ATOM was founded by Mika Salmi, a former executive at RealNetworks (RealAudio / RealVideo Internet technologies) and prior to that an executive at Sony. Financial and advisory backing are being provided by a broad base of people including the founder of both the audio content company Muzak and the digital imaging leader PhotoDisc, the former head of Lucas' Industrial Light & Magic (who also founded Colossal Pictures), the General Manager of Warner Bros Online, and many others from both the entertainment and technology businesses. I am owner of my own company Blackchair Productions and have been curating, exhibiting and distributing short film, video and digital works for three years through my Independent Exposure program. Also onboard the ATOM team is Jannat Gargi whose experience comes from work at both Fox Searchlight and New Line Cinema. We feel the potential of short form entertainment has yet to be truly tapped, and we believe we have a formula for great success.
We believe the commercial potential of short films has yet to be fully realized and that ATOM has the resources and vision to elevate the medium to new heights. Please forward us any catalogs, brochures, contacts, VHS tapes, etc. that would ultimately fulfil our goal to obtain the best independent short films from all over the world?
Please do not hesitate to contact me at (206) 568-6051, or, joel

should you have any questions or comments. Joel S. Bachar Acquisitions
